The Chosen

The Chosen is the story of Rashel Jordan, a seventeen year old vampire hunter who’s mother was murdered by Hunter Redfern, one of the oldest vampires around.  Rashel belongs to a group called the Lancers, an organization of vampire hunters.  When she goes on an expedition to a warehouse with a few other members of the group to follow up on rumours of kidnapped girls, she never expects that the vampire they’ll catch will turn out to be her soulmate, Quinn, who was first introduced to us in Daughters of Darkness.  Quinn and Rashel may not understand what’s happening between them, but whatever it is is intense, and suddenly Rashel can’t bring herself to kill him.  She lets him get away, something that gets her in trouble with the rest of the group.  Then she begins to feel guilty.  She decides to do whatever she can to wipe out the vampires.  When she happens to be in the right place at the right time to save one of the kidnapped girls who was being taken away in a truck, she finds out that some sort of operation, she believes slave trading, is going on.  As she learns more, she finds that Quinn is one of the vampires involved.  Vowing to destroy Quinn and to save the girls, Rashel goes undercover and gets herself kidnapped.  She is taken to an island, where she learns that the girls are not intended as slaves at all but as part of a bloodfeast.  Working quickly, she gets the girls ready to escape, and then Quinn shows up again.  She tries but, just like before, cannot bring herself to kill him.  When Quinn realizes who she is though, he takes her to a room where Rashel believes he intends to murder her, and tells her that he’s in love with her.  Rashel, crazy as it seems, is in love with him as well.  They’re soulmates and Quinn, seeing no other alternative, wants to turn her into a vampire.  Rashel manages to convince him not to though, and together they decide to stop the bloodfeast.  Unfortunately it’s not as easy as they think.  They threaten the other vampires that they will turn them in to Hunter Redfern, only to find out that Hunter Redfern is the one behind the bloodfeast to begin with.  They are saved by a fire, started by one of the girls who’s out for revenge, and manage to get away, where they realize that the only place they have left to go is to Circle Daybreak, the organization that aims to bring humans and night people together.

This book is important for a lot of reasons.  First of all, it plays on a subject mentioned in Daughters of Darkness, that of vampire hunters.  Next, it begins to show Circle Daybreak’s importance.  From now on Circle Daybreak and their mission is an important aspect of the series.  It brings up the human slave trade which is later central to the plot of Black Dawn.  It also shows Hunter Redfern, one of the most powerful vampires, attempting to make changes in the Night World.
